The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland located at base of neck. It is responsible for synthesis of thyroid hormones that affect every part of the body. At times the thyroid does not make and release enough thyroid hormones and it causes a condition known as hypothyroidism which leads to weight gain. At other times the thyroid is overactive due to hyperthyroidism and causes weight loss. The thyroid hormone controls the rate of our metabolism. It is very important to keep both types of thyroid problem at bay. 

 

Thyroid symptoms include sleep disorders, thinning hair, excessive sweating, unusual weight gain. Hypothyroidism responds well to dietary changes. Dietician Sheela Sherawat mentor at Diet Clinic advices that thyroid cure is possible through following dietary changes

 

Reduce greatly or totally eliminate caffeine and sugar. Remove processed carbohydrates such as white rice, paste and floor from diet. Eat more of non starchy vegetables such as asparagus, baby corn, bean sprouts.

 

Increase your protein intake – Make sure to include more protein in your diet plan. Protein is essential for transporting thyroid hormones to different cells and tissues. Eating more protein with every meal can increase availability of thyroid hormones in cells. Try and eat nuts and nut based butters like peanut butter, lean meat, eggs and legumes.

 

Increase these micro nutrients as part of healthy diet plan –

Increase iodine – Iodine is an essential mineral that is very necessary for proper functioning of thyroid gland. Those with deficiency of iodine are at risk of hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency is a common ailment and affects about 30% of the world. Make use of iodized salts to reduce iodine deficiency. Eat more of iodine rich food such as sea fish, eggs and dairy.

 

Increase selenium – Selenium helps the thyroid hormones function in the tissues and cells. Selenium also has powerful antioxidant benefits. Make sure you add selenium rich foods to your diet such as fish, eggs and legumes. Try to not consume a selenium supplement as in large doses selenium is harmful to the human body.

 

Increase zinc – Zinc too helps thyroid hormones function in cellular level. Zinc also allows the body to regulate thyroid stimulating hormone. It is more or less rare to suffer from zinc deficiency but if you are deficient in zinc make sure you consume zinc rich foods like shellfish and chicken.

 

You also need to avoid certain foods if you have hypothyroidism. These foods are known as goitrogens and inhibit normal functioning of thyroid. Many foods in our daily diet contain goitrogens –

1-Avoid soy bean and tofu.

2-Avoid cauliflower, broccoli, spinach.

3-Avoid food containing gluten such as bread and paste.
